On April 28, 2015 Supreme Court will be facing the case of Obergefell v Hodges, a case that will decide whether or not same sex marriage is a constitutional right. Massachusetts became the first state to recognize same sex marriage in 2003. Now in 2015 supreme court is deciding whether or not all states are required to recognize same sex marriage. There are 37 states that recognize same sex marriage and give the people the same rights as a different sex couple.
Studies have shown that children with same sex parents do just as well in school as children with different sex parents (American Sociological Association). People who believe that all republicans are bad people and hate same sex marriage might be wrong. The state of Ohio is saying that the voters had out the bans on same sex marriage themselves. This case won't be a landslide win for the LGBTQ community but it may put the whole debate of whether or not same sex marriage should be a constitutional right (New York Times, Bazelon, Liptak).
The way I see it, who cares whether or not a same sex couple gets married. It has no direct effect on me at all. Famous comedian Aziz Ansari said it best, “If you’re against gay marriage, you just don’t like gay people.” I believe that is true. Everybody that doesn't like people in the LGBTQ community will back their thoughts up with saying that the Bible tells them not to like gays, which is fine but, there are a lot of people that say that the book of Leviticus is an invalid text in the Bible, which is where the bible says that homosexuality is a sin. With so many people who are becoming more and more progressive I believe that the supreme court will rule in favor of equal marriage. There are lots of people who will be offended by the ruling but i’m sure they would be mad if they couldn't marry the person they love.
